The Green Difference electricity meter from Kamstrup supports this development by implementing a Z-Wave module.
The Z-Wave module allows transmitting consumption data to some kind of monitor in a central place of the house, for example a display in the kitchen or as a gadget on the computer desktop, thus making the energy consumption very visible and manifest, and ultimately increasing energy awareness.
The really brilliant idea of integrating a power meter into the Z-Wave network is that it enables the consumer to watch his consumption real time. Turning the flat screen on can be immediately reflected in the consumer display.
Energy efficiency with home automation
The energy metering part of home automation system can be compared to the fuel consumption indicator in the car showing actual and average consumption. This has a proven effect on how people drive.
When the consumer gets the possibility of comparing this day’s consumption with yesterday’s consumption or two months with each other just by pushing a button, he will much more likely be ready to cut down on energy consuming devices, especially when the consumption information is converted into money values.
The Green Difference power meter delivers information to the house owners in order to facilitate energy efficient actions – for instance transmitting signals of changes in tariff letting the consumer know when to turn on the washing machine.
Z-Wave
As a member of the Z-Wave Alliance, the Green Difference residential meter is able to communicate with more than 225 products developed by more than 160 different companies.
With the Z-Wave technology the house owner is allowed to create an in-house mesh network with the possibility of communicating with all Z-Wave products from a single interface.
Because of the energy efficiency perspectives, the Z-Wave based home automation system is being supported by the Danish Electricity Saving Trust which is campaigning for the ‘Intelligent Home’.
